Some dental concerns can be safely managed at home until you’re able to see a dentist. If your situation is life-threatening — such as difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, or extreme pain — call 911 and seek emergency medical care right away. For urgent but non-life-threatening dental needs, our team can provide same-day or next-day appointments as available.
Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
Avulsed Tooth (knocked-out tooth)
- Primary teeth (baby teeth) should not be re-implanted to avoid damage to permanent teeth.
- Permanent teeth should be re-implanted as soon as possible to improve the chance of success.
- Hold the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Gently rinse with milk or saliva.
- If possible, place the tooth back into the socket right away. Don’t worry if it’s not perfectly positioned.
- If you cannot place it back, store the tooth in milk or in your mouth between the cheek and gums.
- Call Brighton Healthy Smiles at (810) 227-6567.
Extruded or Intruded Tooth (tooth pushed out of place)
- Gently, yet firmly, push the tooth back into place, if possible.
- Call (810) 227-6567 for guidance and an appointment.
Broken or Fractured Tooth
- Clean the injured area and apply ice to reduce swelling.
- Call our office — we will assess your situation, determine if antibiotics are needed, and plan treatment to relieve pain and restore your tooth.
Pain and Swelling
- If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical attention immediately by calling 911.
- Otherwise, call (810) 227-6567 so we can diagnose the cause and recommend the best treatment.
