In the Past
Historically, at least two office visits were needed for a crown to be designed, fabricated, and cemented in place. At the first visit, the dentist would shape the tooth, then take an impression of that shape, and finally create and apply a temporary crown. The second appointment would consist of removing the temporary crown, trying-in the new crown and lastly cementing it in place.
Now
With CEREC technology the process of creating a crown with excellent fit and quality is much more streamlined and convenient. To start, the tooth will be prepared for a crown, and a digital image will be taken of the tooth with a specialized camera that is accurate up to 15 microns (roughly 1/2000th of an inch!). Using the digital scan, a 3-D model of the tooth will be generated by utilizing state-of-the-art CAD software, allowing us to design the crown chairside. This takes only a few minutes. The CEREC milling unit fabricates the permanent restoration from a solid block of ceramic, then glazes it in a special oven at 1500 degrees. This entire process typically takes less than 40 minutes depending on the type of material we use. You can relax, watch TV, or read a magazine or book while you wait.
Why Choose a CEREC One-Visit Crown?
- They look beautiful, as they are all ceramic. Traditional crowns often look fake due to the metal on the inside of the crown.
- Durability. Being made from a solid block of ceramic eliminates the junction between porcelain and metal, which is usually where traditional crowns break.
- Convenience. In today’s busy world, it is nice to have the whole procedure completed in one visit and not to have to come back after wearing a temporary crown for two or three weeks.
- Amazing precision. The imaging is all digital. There is no need for messy impression materials, which traditionally had potential to introduce distortions that would compromise the fit of the crown. Instead, the digital image can be manipulated, with zero distortion. The end result is a restoration with an amazingly precise fit.
